The Best Day is One with My Parents

A song that really represents my childhood is “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift. My Mom was a stay-at-home Mom and I have so many memories of my brother and I sitting at the kitchen table playing and talking to her. In the song Taylor says,
There is a video
I found from back when I was three
You set up a paint set in the kitchen
And you're talking to me
It's the age of princesses and pirate ships
And the seven dwarves
As a child I had a very active imagination and there are videos of me creating stories and telling them to Mom and Erich. I enjoyed princess stories and also stories that had horses.

There are videos and pictures of me telling stories to my Mom as a child and this song reminds me of the bond I share with my amazing Mom. One of my favourite stories is when I was three and we were going on a trip to PEI. We had left that morning and when we were in the hotel that night my Mom asked us what we remembered from home. Erich said he remembered Gee (Grandma), Major (her dog), our house and the tree in our front yard. When Mom asked me I promptly replied, “I amember nofing”. My Mom tells how her and my Dad laughed so hard at the earnest expression on my face as I solemnly said these words. My Mom realized that I had no idea what the word “remember” meant so thus my answer. There are many moments like this in my life that bring joy and laughter to my family as we “amember” them.

Taylor also sings, “Daddy's smart and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world”. Like every child, I loved (and still love) my parents and was never shy to tell them so. My Mom remembers me always telling her that she smelled good. I would tell her that she smelled “sweet and like baby powder”. Also when I was young my dad was a never-ending fountain of knowledge. He seemed to have an answer for everything and I find that he still does. And if he doesn’t, he will lie. But, my Dad is a really bad liar. When he is making something up, his eyebrows always quiver. I still think my Dad is smart and my Mom is pretty just like the song says.

The song ends with the lyrics,
Now I know why all the trees change in the fall
I know you were on my side
Even when I was wrong
And I love you for giving me your eyes
Staying back and watching me shine.
These words are so true. Parents are always watching out for their kids and even if it seems excessive, they just do it because they love us and want us to be the best we can be. I feel that this song is an ode to all parents from their kids who never say “thank you” enough. Even though we are growing up we do depend on our parents and they will try their very best to always be there. I owe my parents everything and this is why “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift is my theme song

  1. I don't "amember" ever hearing this song, but it sounds good.

  2. This is precious, and so true! I also have tapes of my childhood and whenever I watch them with my family we just laugh. The song sounds perfect for your life.
